After a short overview of the project Corporate Invention Board, we explore in this article the technological field of telecommunications. This is an illustration of possible uses of: the project’s data, the analysis and visualizations offered by the tool.

In the example above, we explore group’s portfolio of priority patent priority in technological domain of telecommunications. This is providing a ranking: the Top applicants (assignees) for the technological domain of Telecommunications in the world between 1986 and 2006. Thus from the visualization interface, it is also possible to expand the technology. In this example, for Telecommunications, the first five companies is:

• Computer Hardware : Nec Corporation (31 700 priority patents)
• Leisure Goods : Panasonic Coporation (26 000 priority patents)
• Electronic equipment : Canon Inc (21 200 priority patents)
• Chemicals : LG Corp (19 100 priority patents)
• Computer Services : Fujitsu Limited (18 100 priority patents)

This overview shows the overall situation between 1986 and 2006. To obtain some elements on the dynamics (evolution) at work in this technological field, we need for analysis purposes to cut out the 20 years into two periods.

1^st period: situation between 1986 and 1995

For this period, the first five groups according to their patent portfolio priorities are:

• Computer hardware : NEC Corporation (21 400 priority patents)
• Computer hardware : FUJITSU Limited (13 400 priority patents)
• Leisure goods : PANASONIC Corporation (12 700 priority patents)
• Electronical equipement : CANON Inc (10 700 priority patents)
• Fixed line telecommunications : NIPPON TELEGRAPH AND TELEPHONE Corporation (7200 priority patents)

2^nd period : situation between 1996 and 2006

For this period, the first five groups according to their patent portfolio priorities are:

• Chemicals : LG Corp. (17 600 priority patents) +
• Electronic equipment : SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS Co., LTD. (13 600 priority patents) +
• Leisure goods : PANASONIC Corporation (13 300 priority patents) ≈
• Electronical equipement : CANON Inc (10 400 priority patents) ≈
